President Maia Sandu’s public declaration (in January 2026) that, in the event of a referendum on unification with Romania, she would vote “for” stirred a large interest from unexpected quarters, including international media. Maia Sandu’s statement has helped legitimize a subject that was previously treated cautiously by Moldova’s political mainstream. The debate exposes a fundamental tension between cultural proximity to Romania, a distinct Moldovan political identity, and the practical preference for European integration within the existing Moldovan state.
We ask what Maia Sandu’s statement changed in the unification debate, and whether it should be understood as a personal conviction, a strategic political signal, or a response to Moldova’s security vulnerability.
We also explore how the theme of unification is used by different political forces in Moldova and Romania. What is the public support for unification in Moldovan and Romanian societies? What are the chances that unification will ever happen?
